This pledge was included in most of the Sullivan County Conservation District Annual Reports since 1949 or so and still rings true today. It originated from a contest in Outdoor Life Magazine in 1946. It took 2 years to choose a winner and was finally announced in December 1948. The winner was Janet Ensing of Michigan and she had the honor of presenting it to President Harry S. Truman.
