In 1976 Grafton County Conservation District embarked on a new venture: aerial seeding of a winter rye cover crop on 400 acres of corn land belonging to 17 different landowners. This land usually is left without cover during the winter months because the corn is harvested so late in the season that effective cover crops are difficult to establish. Supervisor Lewis Veghte, Jr. and landowner George F. Ritchie of Piermont, Outstanding Cooperator of 1965 viewing Mr. Ritchie’s winter rye. A fixed wing aircraft was used to seed 120 lbs. of rye per acre, directly into standing corn in mid August. The results were encouraging. #nhdistricts75th
