Grafton County Conservation District was founded on April 24, 1946. We have been committed to healthy soils from the beginning.

When Mr and Mrs. John Perkins bought the Joel Barney Farm in Plymouth in 1976, a conservation plan was developed including a scientific inventory of his land (soil map) and his decisions for implementing the plan. In the picture, John looks at the pit, which is designed to store manure from 150 animals for one year. The district placed a high priority on facilities such as this, as an efficient means of pollution control. In this case, the manure was stored as a liquid, greatly increasing the nutrient retention and thus its value to the farmer. The liquid manure could then be sprayed on the soil and harrowed in as a fertilizer.
